videbeck's international seminar♥

August 03, 2008.
Sunday.
0800 - 1700H.
World Trade Center.

No rest for the first week of august, straight activities still up!

And yes, this day was all for Dr. Shiela Videbeck's seminar about therapeutic communication. My bestfriend and I went there together. We arrived there 15 minutes after 8:00 and the line at the entrance of World Trade Center reached almost the highway! Imagine how many students from each Nursing Schools were present that day to hear the seminar that costs us at abour 990 pesos? Well all I could say was, it was more than 2000 nursing students. When you have friends who usually comes early, you could just line up with them not bothering to be on the last line. Ahahaha!

The seminar really started late because there were a lot of students who registered and who are still in line waiting for their ticket to be stamped and be able to seat inside. As I enter the area, we received free hand outs or outline of discussion for that day then we started finding a row for all of us to seat together. Though, we were not seated in front of the stage, it was fine with us as long as we are all comfortably seated together. Hehehe. All for one, one for all. As usually, the last person that would arriving in our group, is no other than Mr. Jan Philippe Crisostomo, who left home at about 9:00! Lucky him, there was till 1 seat available in our row.

The seminar started at about 9:30 (exzctly the same time Mr. Crisostomo arrived and was on line but managed to come inside at about 9:45). During the first part of the discussion, I was so focussed in listening with what Dr. Videbeck was discussing. But as the discussion continued, I got really bored and just talk with my bestfriend and other classmates.

And then there was the first break! Whew! The topic really is boring! Though some of the topic discussed by Dr. Videbeck was already discussed to us, it was really the hardest part to understand, more so, it was the hardest part every board exam.

First break ended. As an evidence of what we were doing then here's a picture. Ta-da! Picture taking! And not just that. We were palying Tara's Nintendo Ds, but don't worry it was in connection of us being nurse and still educative. Ahaha! The first game Janjan and I played was like a "Brain Age" game. And the result of my brain age was my favorite and my all the time jersey number "37". Ahahaha! Nice. Then Janjan got "45", if I'm not mistaken. Then our attention was caught when Dr. Videbeck let's us answer the questions in the hand out. All the student nurses and some other clinical instrustors answered it quietly then after a few minutes of answering, Dr. Videbeck asked it aloud then all answered in chorus. We got correct answers and wrong answers. Hehe. After the question and answer part, Lunch Time! Menu: Garlic chicken with rice, brownies and tetra pack juice. You know what, I'm just being honest but the rice was like been cooked at 6:00 in the morning then was served at lunch time! Goodness! Most of my friends had to go the comfort room for that! And to my surprise, the food was really prepared later in the morning but not 6:00 as I expected but worst, it was prepared at 3:00 in the morning! No wonder a lot of people there got their stomach turned upside down. (I found this out after the seminar) We went in the farthest comfort room located in the second floor because there were a lot of students lined up in the first floor comfort room. And in the second floor, there were just us and 3 other student nurses taking pictures of themselves. They even asked me to take pictures of them and of course I won't let it be just them, I told them to take us picture as well. =p

Lunchtime ended. Still,
we weren't fully listening to the discussion but still somehow, e manage to answer some of her questions. Ahaha! Half participating! Ahaha. =] While we were plaiyng a new game which was "Trauma Center". In that game, we're surgeons doing major operations. The game was really fun! We got addicted that we kept on playing it the whole seminar. The first stage where easy enough to finish because the nurse in the game is teaching us every procedures to be done but in the latter stage, we were the only one to do the operation and as a result, we killed 4 patients already with pancreatic cyst! Whoah! But when we got the chance to finally save the patient, no-more-battery! Aw. Too bad.

At the end of the seminar, schools from different places got the chance to have a picture with Dr. Videbeck but our group just lined up outside to get our certificate because it was really crowded! Before going directly home, we saw that the other entrance door in WTC had an activity with Jolibbe and the gang, so we first got ourselves have pictures taken. Ahaha! The immaturity in us. =]

Then, we headed staright to Tara's ride and went to MOA. But we were really hungry so, we ate in Burger King! It was my first time to be in MOA and the band welcomed me. Ahahah. Feeling? And there I saw a huge picture of the top UAAP players including CHRIS TIU in Adidas. Hehehe. And beside Adidas, my friends saw a power sale! So they really rushed their way in seeing what books are on sale. Well, as usual Janjan and I just waited for them and was on the anime books part and cars. Ahaha. We then went to National Bookstore because Ate Mai was looking for a book for her to study for the upcoming Midterms, Tomorrow!

As we bid our "see you tomorrow", Jade, Ate Mai and I separated with Tara, June and Janjan. We had difficulty waiting for a bus going back to Pacita, so instead, we rode a bus going to Ayala and then from there Jade rode a bus to San Pedro then Ate Mai and I waited for the shuttle going to Southwoods. But oh man. we arrived in the shuttle at 7:30PM and we waited for 10 passengers before the van could go. That was the deal said by 1 of the operators but to our surprised they waited for the van to be full before we departed. It was already 9:30 when we left Ayala and I got so mad that I shouted at the driver. I didn't imagine myself getting mad like that again. Oh the day started right but it ended so bad. I have my midterms duty tomorrow that's why I'm really bothered, I shouldv'e been at home at 8:30 but instead I got home 11:00 and I would be waking up at 4:00AM. I wasn;t able to read my notes, even scanned it. I was really tired, so I put myself to sleep when I got home.

(After that incident in Ayala shuttle, I don't ride there anymore. Instead, I ride a bus going to Pacita.)

acquaintance party '08♥

August 2, 2008.
Saturday.
Palacio De Manila.

1700 - 2100H.

Morning.
We had our pictorial for our capping. I was in school an hour early than the set time for me to prepare myself for this pictorial. But the photographer came in late, so we have to adjust our planned activity for that day. After the pictorial, we headed straight to nearby salon to have our nails done. And eventually, due to the delay caused that morning, we attended our lecture 10 minutes late. Luckily, our professor understands it. =] Pathophysiology. That was our lecture for that day before our said party. I have to admit it, I was pre-occupied for the event that I really can't focus on the discussion. But I got surprised that the lesson was all about cells, so I have nothing to worry about. It was discussed already during my early years so all I have to do is just read it at home to refresh the terminologies and other functions and all. Thanks to our good professor, she allowed us to go prepare early than the usual end of class (1 hour early to prepare for the event).

Afternoon.
I rushed myself to a salon to have my hair fixed. I really can't fix my hair alone. Aw! It was really a bad hair day for me. The hassle and all. Actually, I decided that I myself will do the make up, but since I really don't have nay time for that, I just decided to let the stylist do the make up thing. I finished fixing myself at exactly 5:00 PM (the said call time for the party). I am not supposed to be late because I was the one assigned for the attendance for my section but then again, I was still late. Ahahaha! I got relieved when I saw a friend of mine doing the attendance for me! Whew!~ I'm actually not the only one assigned for the attendance, I have a partner but he was also late for a reason that he was lazy to come early. As I arrived the place, I met with my bestfriend (jade) because it was a first come frist serve rule for seats. Good thing she came early and reserved a seat for me.

When my partner (janjan) came, we returned to the attendance area to assist our classmates. But since our section was so unfortunate for the schedule, most of them were late and had to sign up in a different attendance sheet handled by one of the adminitrators. When the attendance area was closed, we enjoyed oursleves by finally watching the program proper hosted by the ever Go happy girl ~ Ate Asi and 2 other 4th years. Whenever there is party, Vanity strikes! Ahaha! so maybe I'll just post lotsa pictures for this entry..

♥with my beastie (jade)..
♥with uisa-tistic..

♥with bobi-licious..
♥with hottie gailaloo..

♥with pretty anna..

♥with pretty antin and pretty sue..

♥with janjan..

And so there you have it, lotsa pictures! Hehehe =] But that's not all the pictures I have. To view more, it's all in my multiply account.

By the way, the dance troupe really did very good in their presentation. It was one hell dance they've shown to us. I really admire those who can dance so well. I had a great night, though I was expecting more of a dance like party than a band like one, cause it was like a battle of the bands thing that happened. Oh well, I'm still hoping to have a school party where we could all the dance in a big dance floor. Ahaha! Just like the one I've experienced during my junior and senior promenade. I love parties like that but as long as there's no alcoholic beverage and stuffs like that, cause I'm pretty allergic with those stuffs. Ahahaha! =]

nursery duty♥

July 14 - August 6, 2008.
0600 - 1400 H.

This marked the date for our 2nd duty rotation in the Nursery area of Makati Medical Center, 5th floor circular.

Our first meeting with our group's respective clinical instructor, Ms. Stacyrae Viason, was more on Orientation of what to see and expect during our shift. We weren't allowed to go to the Nursery area during our first day, instead we had our review about the basic concepts in handling the baby and the different routines to be done. We stayed in kalayaan building room 601 to discuss and review everything. We even had our first surprised quiz which I am lucky to pass. Whew! Moreover, we had a very brief discussion, cephalo-caudal discussion about a normal baby.

For our 2nd and 3rd day duty in the nursery, we weren't able to have our duty because our clinical instructor got sick. So we decided to continue our duty on the second week (July 21-23). By that week, we had our first clinical rotation in the nursery and we were able to handle babies assigned to us. Having to hear the endorsement is an important aspect in the clinical roatation, once you've missed it, you miss the whole day activity. So being late is a very tragic thing to ever happen to you and moreover, being absent. My first patient assignment was a baby boy (foreigner), he is really cute and he was born on July 20, I handled him on July 21 - 28. My first baby boy was also the first time i had seen a baby to be circumcised and had a release tongue tied. So much experience with the first baby boy! =]

Due to my classmate being absent, I had to take care of 2 babies. My first baby boy and my second baby boy (it's as if the babies are mine. Ahahaha!). The second baby boy was really big and he already looked and weighed as much as a 4 months old baby! And to think I have to do morning care (bathing the baby) doing football hold (one hand hold), and feeding him every 2 hours of my shift. But I did enjoyed taking care of 2 babies, so that I won't get bored. We really enjoyed when my second baby boy cries for he is hungry or wet, because his cry was like "paos", my classmate can even imitate how he cries and when she do so, we really miss my second baby boy.

Finally, during the last day of our 2nd week, I had my chance to receive admission coming from the delivery room. When the nurses shouted "baby coming up!", I got so excited because all the routines taught to us will be put to practice. And that was my third baby boy! I was the one to suction all the secretions after he was been delivered. Then dried him and thermoregulated him until he was fit to be bathed. I even did my first cord care and my second injection of vitamin K in the left vastus lateralis (my first was during our duty in the community when I was in my second year in college). But before I can ever do all those things, my clinical instructor had so many questions for me and if I can't answer all those mode of action, pathophysiology and so on, I won;t be able to have my admission but since I had, therefore, I had answered all of it. Wah! So happy. =]

3rd week in our 2nd rotation. My first, second and third baby boy are already discharged by this week so there will be new patient assignment for some of us. And so, I had my fourth baby boy! New routines are done to him especially since he has a physiologic jaundice. He was under a phototherapy and a pre mature baby, so he tends to regurgitates his milk. Feeding him was the challenge, I have to make sure he finishes at least 25 ml of his milk formula for him to grow fast. Good thing was he can tolerate to as much as 30 ml on the suceeding days. That made me really happy! I chose my fourth baby boy for my individual case (somewhat a thesis). Imagine, I crammed for my individual case doing it one night without sleep! so the next day i had to submit it, I think I had big eye bags! Eew! Ahahah! Next time I'll try not to cram. Hmmm.

4th week in our 2nd rotation. During this week, I had my first baby girl assigned to me. And oh man, her cry really made my ears go psycho! She wasn't hungry, nor wet, I tried to cuddle her but still, she won't stop crying until she feels like stopping. That's why I have decided that I would really love to have my first baby, a boy! If I could control what the gender of my first baby would be, I'd go for a boy. Ahaha! Luckily, my first baby girl got discharged the next day after I had handled her.

We had our ward class on the second day in pour 4th week. We learned a lot of stuffs during our ward class, thanks to our clinical instructor. We presented the case of client by having a skit and a dance portion before entirely discussing the whole condition of the patient. During the skit, I got to play the role of the radiant warmer! Ahahaha! And we had fun singing and dancing "Pampers" theme song, "Good Morning Baby". It went out well, though the hardest part yet again was the quiz. But it's part of learning, so we just have to live with it. =] TOPIC: in vitro fertilization and gestational diabetes mellitus.

The last day of our second clinical rotation. Another baby boy for me and I have a partner for taking care of my fourth baby boy. This baby feeds fast and can tolerate up to 60 ml of milk! Whoah! This day was lax, all we have to do is read our Pillitteri Book and finish our activity for there are only few patients.

That goes for our second clinical rotation! It was fun! And our group was bonded more than ever. Though, Gerie, one of my groupmate, has to repeat the whole rotation for she was confined in the hospital. But she's okay right now. =] And oh, this was the rotation where almost half of my groupmates got sick, luckily, I have a tough immune system to protect me from sickness. Hey! I don't want to have an absent, I'm looking forward to receiving "The perfect attendance award" in my graduation. Hehehe. At least, I'd be receiving an award. Ahaha!

gossip girl.♥

July 12, 2008

The day after our capping ceremony. We had our class in the afternoon which was Psychopathophysiology under Ms. Salera. And oh my, I forgot that we have quiz for this day! I just scanned my notes hoping that something from it would retain in my mind. But i guess this was my day. I got 14/15 = 96% in our quiz and i was really surprised.=0 But either way, i still have to review my lessons before going to school and not just rely on p
ure luck.

The highlight for this day was actually 2 event. (1)Ambassasdors Of The Lord session and (2)General Assembly for 'The Artiar', our school newspaper. They are both happening on the same time so i just decided to choose the general assembly and attend the aol organization next saturday for my membership completion.

The general assembly was fun. I actually joined the Art Department, where i had to compose myself in being a cartoonist and at the same time, a writer. I had once became a head cartoonist during my highschool years but it was just for a short span of time and i decided to resign. Ahaha! So childish. I really wasn't expecting that big responsibility at that time when I auditioned for it, actually the main reason i got myself auditioned was for me to be excused in one of our boring class then. But with no intention of actually becoming the head! But now i realized, i lost a big opportunity. So now i'm trying to patch things up and continue with it. Aja!

During the meeting, responsiblities and rules were imposted to all the members. Student handbook was given where all the rules and policies were written. Each department was clustered for them to dicuss a plan for the next newspaper. Our head cartoonist, sheimi, gave us an assignment to submit to her at least 1 art in a week. And after the conference in each departments, we had our picture taking! As my title says, gossip girl, that was the motif of the meeting with stars and a paparazzi set at the back of the room.

I ended up going home at 9PM.

til the next post.

capping ceremony.♥

The moment all the juniors are waiting for, the placing of the cap in our heads as a sign that we've made it! Yatta!

Time is of the essence when it comes to nursing, you should come an hour earlier than the call time.
Coming from Laguna, i had to wake up 4:00 Am to prepare myself. 9:00 is the call time
but of course my parents would also be preparing themselves with my grandmas from both side, even though the allowed number of guests are just 2. You know filipinos when it comes to events like this. Always punctual and following invitation. Well, i don't blame them cause i know they are excited like me as well.

We departed from Laguna at about 6:00 in the morning but before going directly to the venue (don bosco church makati), we headed towards caltex-slex and ate in McDonald's first. WE got a little overconfident about the time that we departed from there at 7:30. At 8:00, i arrived at venue. I was so surprised because all of the students are already on line and in their proper uniforms, so i really hurried up cause i really thought that there was a stat announce
ment that the program would start early well in fact there is none. Snap back to reality, the program started at 9:00 exactly. So on the minutes waiting in line, we just took pictures of ourselves with our peeps and clinical instructors as well as to our dear relatives.

We had a lot of fun especially the taking of picture part but the weather? It's blazing hot even though it was just 8 in the morning. The event started exactly 9PM. We first had our march going inside the church, holding the nightingale lamp on our right hand and the cap in the left hand. The ceremony started with a mass then proceeded with the program proper by hearing speech from the head clinical instructor and of course the Nightingale's Pledge. An oath for us nurses. After we pledged our oaths, every student nurses are called by tens to come up on stage to have their caps (for the female) and pins (for the males) placed by their respective clinical instructors in front of the church. Our section was called last because i belong to section E. Hehehe.^^ It was a nice feeling when the symbol of being a nurse was placed now into your head. Even though cameras and video cams were not allowed while the program is on progress, gerie, bobi and I still managed to take some pictures while gerie's aunt took videos. And as we had out final picture-our class picture, the program has ended. Ultimate picture taking time! I was busy taking pictures with my friends for remembrance while my brother is busy looking for my crush (he's only a second year student and he happens to be our usher). My official photographer, Patrick Kevin Angeles, my brother. Ahaha!

After the program (it ended at about 11AM), we went to Gerry's Grill in Glorietta for our lunch. I met some of my colleagues there eating with their family as well.

Before going home, my dad has to finish something. So we went to Alabang-Honda near Alabang Town Center if I'm not mistaken to get some parts. And since we're near ATC, we were tempted to watch a movie. And so we did. We watched Wanted starring Angelina Jolie. It was so cool. The effect of the bullet and the way they were trained to be an assassin was great and that's what i want to learn! Hehe. Seriously I do!

We just got home late. I was tired that time that after I do my bed time routine I ended up sleeping already without preparing for my things tomorrow for my class (even in saturday we have classes).

til the next post.

rotation in the delivery room.♥

As i started my third year in college, i began to have more consistent and longer periods for every routine in areas assigned to us to have duty. And our first rotation was in the delivery room of makati medical center with one of the respected clinical instructor from our school.

June 16-July 9.

During our first day for our 1st rotation, we were all so anxious for we don't know what to do yet. And of course, delivery rooms are considered to be one of the special areas in the hospital.
Our duty time is from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM from Mondays through Wednesday for 4 weeks. Whew! just thinking about the time makes us wanna sleep. (Ahaha!) But of course, we can't or else a disciplinary slip would be given and goodbye "most humane award".

Our first meeting were more on orientation about the area itself, procedures done and equipments used. We don't have patient care yet during our first meeting but instead we familiarized ourselves in the area and of course the equipments! Luckily, we got to observe one major case, and that was a cesarean section. The unfortunate part was, we were able to o
bserve only the part where the doctor has to suture the mother's organs and skin. we weren't able to see the most important part which was the actual cutting of the skin and the organs to be able to get the baby out of the mommy's uterus. But atleast, we got the vibes of what it feels like being inside the delivery room. And oh, I'm super excited. This was the thing i'm looking forward to!

As days and weeks passed by, we got ourselves familiar to the
procedures. We weren't anxious that much when there is a stat procedure to be done or any cases on hand. Well, it's just a matter of getting used to blood and organs and genitalia. Of course, we weren't there just to observe, we have to have our own case by which we had to assist (for the baby after delivery- you suction it, test its APGAR'S score, place the ID Band and deliver the baby to the nursery room for further assessment. And oh, the most thrilling part in assisting, you have to go down the delivery room and shout the baby's weight in grams, pounds and ounces! Ahahaha! Why thrilling you ask? 'Cause everybody in the DR would stare at you for you really have to make your voice loud enough for all of them to hear. Pretty embarrassing? Oh NO. It's just normal. Hehe.^^)

Of course, if you have to assist a baby, you can al
so assist the mother! or what we call the actual case. What did i do here? Hmmm.. I just placed my sterile hands with gloves on the sterile field! and that was it! Ahahaha.. But in my case, after the actual SVD or sponteaneous vaginal delivery, the doctor faced the baby to me fro me to initially suction it. My hands were trembling but i got the job done. Pretty cool isn't it?^^

Major case
such as cesarean section and TABSO are the most exciting case to have. But during our shift, we didn't had any TABSO cases, all of which are C
S. What do you expect us to do there? Oh we just do medical handwashing first and foremost then wear our scrub suits (maintain sterility, or else you'll be scrubbed out and you won't have the opportunity to be involved in the case), you're supposed to give the physician with whatever he/she demands to have (so you really must memorize all the equipments! And btw, almost all the equipments lloks the same!). Sometimes doctors asks questions related to the procedure, luckily i've answered the question. "What's the placenta part that first separated from the mother after giving bith?" The answer? It's duncan! Well, basically there are 2 kinds of placental seperation, only in my case it was the duncan or the dirty side of the placenta. After placental expulsion, i just dirtied my gloves with blood from the placenta. It was warm to touch, really! The longest part in CS, the suturing part. Though the getting the baby out thing takes only about 10 minutes, the suturing takes for 30 minutes or more. The suturing is per layer, if you miss one layer or the gap between 1 suture to the other is not tight, the mother is risk for hemorrhage, that's why it takes a long time for suturing!

The only Minor case I had handled was D&C or dilatation and curretage in tagalog raspa. This was the fastest procedure ive gotten myself into. It was only about 10 minutes! The doctor needs only to assess for bleeding inside the uterus then collects samplt using an OS. After collecting samples from an OS, i experienced transferring the bloody clots fro the OS to the vial with formaline for tests. And that's about it!

Every after rotation was exhausting. You have the privilege for coffee break (for 20 minutes) and meal time (for 45 minutes) but if you have a patient in labor and is fully dilated or ready to give birth, you have to not get your privilege for as to have the case done and signed! I forgot to tell that we have to complete 5 cases from each of the cases in bold, all in all it's 20 cases. Toxic right? Whew! but i can do it! I know i can!

Thinking about the procedures tires me out what about having quizzes and reporting while having your duty? Exhausting right? Plus. Plus. Plus. I got to go home in Laguna every after duty or even during lecture days (thursday to saturday). My parents didn't allow me to stay in dorms. Well, it's just fight for survival then. Ahaha.^^

To divert our attention, we just ebjoyed ourselves in t
aking pictures during meal times (the chance for us to reunite with our cellphones - phones are not allowed during duty).=p

Alright! During the third week, we have to compose our case history for the case presentation or the mini thesis thing. One for the group and one for yourself. And like most of the students do, we crammed! We made and finished our case the night before the submission of the papers. Oh well, i think that's just a normal phenomena for all of us, sleep time? 2-3 hours.=p Hmmm.. Me? 1 and half an hour. But in the end, we managed to present our case. And. We've learned our lessons. Do not cram! Cramming is a sin! Ahaha!

As we end our duty, our case presentation that day (july 9), we had to make it fast for we aill be having our practice for capping in don bosco church makati. We started our rotation anxiously and we ended it the same way we started it. Goodness! I love my group. Ahahaha.. Through good times and bad times.

funny pose infront of the delivery room. too bad gerie is not there.

gail is pregnant!

first post done.
ill be posting late events though^^
