0600 - 1400 H.
This marked the date for our 2nd duty rotation in the Nursery area of Makati Medical Center, 5th floor circular.
Our first meeting with our group's respective clinical instructor, Ms. Stacyrae Viason, was more on Orientation of what to see and expect during our shift. We weren't allowed to go to the Nursery area during our first day, instead we had our review about the basic concepts in handling the baby and the different routines to be done. We stayed in kalayaan building room 601 to discuss and review everything. We even had our first surprised quiz which I am lucky to pass. Whew! Moreover, we had a very brief discussion, cephalo-caudal discussion about a normal baby.
For our 2nd and 3rd day duty in the nursery, we weren't able to have our duty because our clinical instructor got sick. So we decided to continue our duty on the second week (July 21-23). By that week, we had our first clinical rotation in the nursery and we were able to handle babies assigned to us. Having to hear the endorsement is an important aspect in the clinical roatation, once you've missed it, you miss the whole day activity. So being late is a very tragic thing to ever happen to you and moreover, being absent. My first patient assignment was a baby boy (foreigner), he is really cute and he was born on July 20, I handled him on July 21 - 28. My first baby boy was also the first time i had seen a baby to be circumcised and had a release tongue tied. So much experience with the first baby boy! =]
Due to my classmate being absent, I had to take care of 2 babies. My first baby boy and my second baby boy (it's as if the babies are mine. Ahahaha!). The second baby boy was really big and he already looked and weighed as much as a 4 months old baby! And to think I have to do morning care (bathing the baby) doing football hold (one hand hold), and feeding him every 2 hours of my shift. But I did enjoyed taking care of 2 babies, so that I won't get bored. We really enjoyed when my second baby boy cries for he is hungry or wet, because his cry was like "paos", my classmate can even imitate how he cries and when she do so, we really miss my second baby boy.
Finally, during the last day of our 2nd week, I had my chance to receive admission coming from the delivery room. When the nurses shouted "baby coming up!", I got so excited because all the routines taught to us will be put to practice. And that was my third baby boy! I was the one to suction all the secretions after he was been delivered. Then dried him and thermoregulated him until he was fit to be bathed. I even did my first cord care and my second injection of vitamin K in the left vastus lateralis (my first was during our duty in the community when I was in my second year in college). But before I can ever do all those things, my clinical instructor had so many questions for me and if I can't answer all those mode of action, pathophysiology and so on, I won;t be able to have my admission but since I had, therefore, I had answered all of it. Wah! So happy. =]
3rd week in our 2nd rotation. My first, second and third baby boy are already discharged by this week so there will be new patient assignment for some of us. And so, I had my fourth baby boy! New routines are done to him especially since he has a physiologic jaundice. He was under a phototherapy and a pre mature baby, so he tends to regurgitates his milk. Feeding him was the challenge, I have to make sure he finishes at least 25 ml of his milk formula for him to grow fast. Good thing was he can tolerate to as much as 30 ml on the suceeding days. That made me really happy! I chose my fourth baby boy for my individual case (somewhat a thesis). Imagine, I crammed for my individual case doing it one night without sleep! so the next day i had to submit it, I think I had big eye bags! Eew! Ahahah! Next time I'll try not to cram. Hmmm.
4th week in our 2nd rotation. During this week, I had my first baby girl assigned to me. And oh man, her cry really made my ears go psycho! She wasn't hungry, nor wet, I tried to cuddle her but still, she won't stop crying until she feels like stopping. That's why I have decided that I would really love to have my first baby, a boy! If I could control what the gender of my first baby would be, I'd go for a boy. Ahaha! Luckily, my first baby girl got discharged the next day after I had handled her.
We had our ward class on the second day in pour 4th week. We learned a lot of stuffs during our ward class, thanks to our clinical instructor. We presented the case of client by having a skit and a dance portion before entirely discussing the whole condition of the patient. During the skit, I got to play the role of the radiant warmer! Ahahaha! And we had fun singing and dancing "Pampers" theme song, "Good Morning Baby". It went out well, though the hardest part yet again was the quiz. But it's part of learning, so we just have to live with it. =] TOPIC: in vitro fertilization and gestational diabetes mellitus.
The last day of our second clinical rotation. Another baby boy for me and I have a partner for taking care of my fourth baby boy. This baby feeds fast and can tolerate up to 60 ml of milk! Whoah! This day was lax, all we have to do is read our Pillitteri Book and finish our activity for there are only few patients.
That goes for our second clinical rotation! It was fun! And our group was bonded more than ever. Though, Gerie, one of my groupmate, has to repeat the whole rotation for she was confined in the hospital. But she's okay right now. =] And oh, this was the rotation where almost half of my groupmates got sick, luckily, I have a tough immune system to protect me from sickness. Hey! I don't want to have an absent, I'm looking forward to receiving "The perfect attendance award" in my graduation. Hehehe. At least, I'd be receiving an award. Ahaha!
